The Lancet has launched a new Clinical Series on Solid Organ Transplantation, highlighting rapid scientific advances that are reshaping the field. The series addresses three persistent challenges: organ shortages, the harmful side effects of imprecise immunosuppression, and inequities in transplant access and outcomes.
The first paper explores solutions to organ scarcity, including improved preservation methods, next-generation perfusion pumps, and bioengineered pig organs.
The second paper presents innovations in precision immunosuppression, such as cell-free DNA monitoring and advanced molecular pathology tools that allow for individualised treatment and more accurate diagnosis of organ rejection.
The final paper focuses on health equity, offering policy recommendations to ensure global and equitable access to transplantation.
This series will be followed by a forthcoming Lancet Commission on transplantation, aimed at guiding the field’s future through international collaboration.
