The latest issue of Transplant International features a multicentre Spanish study in which sex-related inequities in access to liver transplantation were investigated. Of 14,385 patients analysed, women were less likely to receive a transplant than men and had a longer time on the waiting list. In addition, there was a trend towards a higher risk of exclusion due to clinical deterioration, despite similar disease severity. Although differences are subsiding, the authors emphasise that policies aimed at optimising the entire transplant network should be encouraged to further improve fair and equal access for all patients.
