2024 Report of the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT)

January 14, 2026 | All

The release of the 2024 Report of the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT), which has been managed by the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT) as collaborating centre of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the field of transplantation, presents the latest official data on organ donation and transplantation worldwide.

Based on submissions from more than 90 countries and territories, covering around three-quarters of the global population, the report shows that over 173,000 solid organ transplants were performed globally in 2024. This represents a continued increase in activity compared with previous years. Kidney transplants accounted for the largest proportion, followed by liver, heart, lung and pancreas transplants.

The report records more than 47,000 deceased organ donors worldwide, with donation after brain death remaining the primary source of organs. Donation after circulatory death and living donation also continued to play an important role, particularly in regions with limited deceased donation programmes.

Despite record transplant numbers, the report highlights persistent global inequalities and notes that transplantation still meets only a fraction of worldwide need. Long waiting lists remain common, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
