The Santander Transplant Summit, held on November 9–10, 2023, marked a pivotal moment in the field of organ donation and transplantation. Organised by the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT), under the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Summit centred around the theme “Towards Global Convergence in Transplantation: Sufficiency, Transparency, and Oversight”.
ESOT recently sponsored and attended this event, playing a significant role in addressing critical issues and participating in discussions centred around challenges in the field, with a particular focus on emphasising the significance of data sharing.
With the objective of paving the way for global action in transplantation for the next decade, the Summit explored how transplantation can contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and underscored why this should be considered a healthcare priority.
Additionally, participants worked to critically review the current state of donation and transplantation to identify key challenges, find effective solutions and shape the future direction of transplant activities worldwide.
This document encapsulates the wisdom and consensus reached during the Summit, providing recommendations for future initiatives in transplantation.
