EKITA is the Organ Expert Section of ESOT on kidney transplantation in Europe, providing a forum for kidney transplantation professionals to exchange scientific information and views aimed at providing the best service to European patients.

Since the foundation of ESOT in 1982, most of the members were primarily interested in kidney transplantation. So for a long time there was no real need for a special section. But with time all the specialists of other transplant fields founded their Sections and Committees inside ESOT.

The idea to have a separate Section for renal transplantation evolved gradually. The Kidney Committee of ESOT was founded in 2011 at the 15th ESOT Congress in Glasgow, UK. The name was two years later changed to EKITA (European Kidney Transplant Association) and it serves since then as a Section of ESOT.
