Rhys is a Consultant Nephrologist and Associate Professor at the UCL Centre for Kidney and Bladder Health. He was an undergraduate at Cambridge University, undertook general nephrology training in London, and he subsequently completed a Fellowship in Transplantation at the University of British Columbia. He returned to the Royal Free in 2021 where he works clinically as a transplant nephrologist, and he more recently became clinical lead for kidney transplantation for the trust. He forms part of the leadership of the UCL transplant theme and runs several clinical projects aimed at improving outcomes for kidney transplant recipients as well as being PI on several transplant clinical trials. Rhys is an academic clinician, who’s basic research is focused on the impact of the extracellular ionic environment on immune cell activation with a particular focus on changes in immunity that occur in states of altered sodium balance. He provided the first report of immunodeficiency in patients with Salt-Losing Tubulopathy and is currently exploring the effect of sodium on the alloimmune response. He is a passionate educator and is a course director for several UCL short courses, including UCL Transplantation. He adopts a friendly and inclusive approach to education, and he enjoys supervising both clinical and academic trainees.
