Michiel Nijhoff completed his medicine study with honours at Leiden University in 2009 and his training as an internist and endocrinologist in 2017. Together with a fellowship in endocrinology, he started his research in beta cell transplantation in 2014, focusing on patient-centred outcomes, in vivo beta cell function, and translational research into new treatments to improve short and long term in vivo beta cell survival. Currently, he works as an internist/endocrinologist at the Leiden University Medical Center, where he combines research on and clinical care of patients with severely complicated diabetes who are eligible for or have received an islet or pancreas transplant. Other clinical areas of interest include acute medicine and adrenal diseases.

Current research topics include early medical treatments to mitigate IBMIR and beta cell hypoxia after islet transplantation, clinical indications and outcomes of islet and pancreas transplantation, long term complications of islet and pancreas transplantation, clinical application of stem-cell derived beta(-like) cells, residual endogenous beta cell function in diabetes, and optimization of medical care surrounding beta cell transplantation.
