ELPAT Past Chair

Dr. Emma K. Massey is Associate Professor at the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam, working in the department of Internal Medicine, section of Nephrology & Transplantation. She studied in the UK, the Netherlands and Japan before obtaining her PhD from Leiden University, the Netherlands. She currently leads the research line on psychosocial aspects of kidney transplantation and living donation in her department. Her research interests include psychological well-being of patients and donors, self-management, medication adherence and lifestyle, unspecified (anonymous) living donation, optimal patient and donor education and long term follow-up. In this capacity she supervises PhD and MSc students and advises Nurse Practitioners in their research and teaches undergraduates on these topics. She has published over 40 articles and has been Principle Investigator on numerous projects financed by the Dutch Kidney Foundation. Alongside her research she also conducts the psychological screening of living (anonymous) donors at the Erasmus MC. She is on the board of the Dutch national network on Social Science Research in Nephrology (SWON) and chair of the ‘ELPAT’ platform on the Ethical, Legal and Psychosocial Aspects of Transplantation, a section of the European Society of Organ Transplantation.
