About the award
The ESOT Legacy Award is the highest accolade of our society and celebrates individuals and organisations for their truly outstanding and sustainable achievements in the field of organ, tissue and cell donation and transplantation. This esteemed award recognises long-term contributions across various domains, including research, clinical advancements, training, education and organisation and governance.
The award will be presented during the closing plenary session of ESOT Congress 2023 in Athens on Wednesday, 20 September.
The award winners are chosen following a rigorous process involving members of the ESOT Council, the ESOT Executive and multiple representatives of patient associations. Award recipients must demonstrate well-known and respected ethos and conduct, aligning closely with ESOT’s mission and values.
The ESOT Legacy Award winners 2023
“To me, the ESOT Legacy Award is the culmination of an entire career dedicated to the science and clinical practice of transplantation. Transplantation is simultaneously the most challenging and rewarding area of medicine. I would like to dedicate this award to the patients I have had the privilege to serve since the first heart transplant at Loyola University Chicago; to all colleagues that have shared my journey; Professor Giorgio Prodi, who inculcated in me the love for immunology at the University of Bologna; Professor Fritz Bach, a pioneer of histocompatibility in the US; and to the mentorship of Drs Norman Shumway and Sharon Hunt. The journey continues, as much remains to be done to advance the science and equitable access to transplantation.”
“I was both delighted and humbled to hear that ESOT has honoured me with their 2023 Legacy Award. Any success I have had is a result of working with some of the brightest young researchers in transplantation, and I dedicate this award to them. Organ transplantation remains one of the outstanding successes of modern medicine – transforming and extending the lives of many thousands of people – but there are still problems to solve. Fortunately, we are in a time of unprecedented discovery in medical science, with unparalleled opportunities to use technologies such as machine perfusion to increase organ utilisation and improve long-term outcomes.”
