Dr. Peter Girman is the head of the Diabetes Department IKEM in Prague, Czech Republic, responsible for the human islet transplantation program. After he had received his master’s at the Medical faculty of the University of Kosice, Slovakia, he went to Prague. He started his career at the Laboratory of pancreatic islets IKEM. Under the supervision of prof. Saudek, he did his Ph.D. study at Charles University in Cell biology and pathology. In 2005 with prof. Saudek and Dr.Kriz he did the first islet transplantation in the Czech Republic. In 2022 he organised and did the first islet autotransplantation between the Czech and Slovak republics. Since 2021 Peter has led the largest diabetes department in the Czech Republic, with more than 5000 patients at an outpatient clinic and 29 beds ward with four beds in the intensive care unit. He still actively participates in islet isolations and he has lectured at the 3rd Medical faculty of Charles’University.
