BSC Board Member 2022-2025

Dr. Caterina Lonati is a medical biotechnologist, with a specialization in Human Genetics, who successfully defended her PhD thesis in Molecular Medicine.

She presently works at the Center for Preclinical Research, Policlinico Hospital in Milan, where she actively collaborates with surgeons and anesthesiologists to implement lung and liver Machine Perfusion (MP) in both pre-clinical and clinical settings.

Caterina’s research activity is aimed at developing innovative therapeutic strategies able to reduce tissue damage before transplantation. To this purpose, her research team has investigated the deleterious changes induced by brain death and ischemia/reperfusion at a transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic level. In parallel, she is seeking to set up an advanced reconditioning platform enabling to harness the beneficial effects of Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and of MSC-derived extracellular vesicles during MP.

Concerning clinical research, Caterina’s current project is aimed at introducing a novel real-time technology into routine analysis of samples collected during the preservation phase. The main focus is to identify biomarkers able to complement the traditional acceptance criteria for organ transplantation.
