The European Liver and Intestine Transplant Association (ELITA), previously known as the European Liver Transplant Association (ELTA), is a section of ESOT. Its membership represents the expertise on liver and intestinal transplantation in Europe.
ELPAT is a European platform that brings continuity and progress in European research and dialogue on "Ethical, Legal and Psychosocial Aspects of organ Transplantation". ELPAT currently consists of over 160 experts from more than 25 European countries.
EPITA is established to provide a forum for those working in the field of pancreas and islet of Langerhans transplantation or any other alternative form of beta cell replacement in Europe, to exchange scientific information and views related primarily to providing the best service for patients in Europe requiring pancreas or islet transplantation.
VCA has opened a new era in the field of transplantation, reconstructive and restorative surgery. This Section brings together 10 representatives of major European teams at the forefront in this field.
Originally from the United States, Dr. Hessheimer completed degrees in Chemistry at Texas A&M University (B.S., Summa Cum Laude, 2003) and Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee (M.D., 2009). She completed a Master in Research in Liver Disease and subsequently presented her Doctoral Thesis at the University of Barcelona in 2011.
Dr. Hessheimer initiated training in General Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She completed her Residency in General & Digestive Surgery and performed additional training in Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery & Transplantation at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona. Currently, she is a Specialist in HPB & Transplant Surgery at Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid, Spain.
Dr. Hessheimer is actively involved in clinical and translation research projects and is the author of numerous publications and book chapters. Her ongoing research interests include liver ischemia-reperfusion injury and regeneration, including “small-for-size” liver syndrome; donation after circulatory determination of death; in situ and ex situ organ preservation strategies; minimally invasive approaches to hepatobiliary surgery; and cost and quality of life studies.
Dr. Hessheimer is a member of the International Liver Transplantation Society (Vanguard Committee member 2018-2021), the European Society for Organ Transplantation, the Spanish Society of Surgeons (AEC), the Spanish Liver Transplant Society (SETH), and the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS – Donor, Pancreas, and Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery).
