Wolfgang Ender is a senior transplant coordinator at the Cantonal Hospital in St. Gallen, Switzerland. He completed his basic medical training in nursing as well as his specialised training in anaesthesia at the University Hospital Innsbruck. Wolfgang Ender completed postgraduate studies and obtained an MSc in health care management and an MBA in health services management at the Danube University Krems, Austria.
Since 2008, Wolfgang Ender has been working in the field of transplant medicine. His responsibilities in the field of deceased organ donation include the coordination and supervision of DBD as well as DCD organ donation at a regional level. As one of the first hospitals in Switzerland, the DCD programme was established in 2011 at the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen under the project management of Wolfgang Ender. He is also a co-manager at the regional level for tissue donation.
At the national level, he is a member of the Swisstransplant Transplant Coordination Working Group and a member of expert groups for DCD Organ Donation and the Swiss Donation Pathway.
His other responsibilities include the supervision of the living kidney donor program at a regional level. On a national level, Wolfgang Ender is a Working Group for Living Organ Donation member and is part of the coordinator expert group for cross-over living donation in Switzerland. Furthermore, he works at a national level as an expert in the working group of health insurers on the visualisation of actors and finances in living kidney donation and transplantation. He is a co-author of the Swiss Living Kidney Donor Brochure. In addition to his clinical activities, he is a Quality Manager of the Transplant Centre in the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen.
Wolfgang Ender founded a company that has developed a machine-driven ice mill to produce sterile crushed ice used in multi-organ retrievals. He continues to work on further technical developments in the field of transplantation and organ donation.
Wolfgang Ender is a lecturer for organ donation and transplantation medicine in various medical training courses and a regular speaker at national events in the field of organ donation.
