Project description:
Few areas of medicine illustrate the interplay between scientific ambition, clinical courage and setback as vividly as transplant immunosuppression. From the first successful kidney transplant between identical twins to today’s multi-drug regimens, the path to modern transplantation was anything but linear: groundbreaking innovations alternated with failed trials, unexpected toxicities and hard won lessons. Yet despite remarkable gains in short-term outcomes, many current regimens still rely on a backbone of agents introduced in the 1980s and 1990s, and long-term graft survival has improved far less than early results promised. This opening session of ESOT’s Immunosuppression Educational Pathway sets the scene for the entire programme, tracing where the field has come from, why progress has slowed, and where it is heading next.
