Description & Objectives:

Around 25% of organ transplant recipients encounter acute rejection within the first year post-transplantation. Acute rejection is further categorised into cellular (ACR) and antibody-mediated (AMR) forms. Over the long term, the threat shifts to chronic rejection, which poses a significant risk to graft function and patient survival.

Finding a balance between the beneficial and adverse effects of immunosuppression in preventing or treating rejection remains challenging. Factors such as opportunistic infections and malignancies further complicate this issue. Consequently, there is a keen interest in therapies that can effectively modulate alloimmune responses without suppressing the immune system’s ability to fight infection or malignancy.

Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is used for various indications in solid organ transplant recipients. This workshop aims to highlight the current state-of-the-art of ECP and to address current evidence, barriers, and gaps in the use of ECP after solid organ transplantation.
