EDTCO Board member 2023-2027

Graduated in 1994 at the Autonomous University of Madrid, and trained as specialist in Intensive Medicine at Hospital 12 de Octubre, Madrid (1995-2001). Degree in clinical Psychology (UNED 2001). PhD in Medicine by Autonomous University of Madrid. He has worked for 15 years as attending physician in the Intensive Medicine department at Joan Hospital XXIII, Tarragona where he also performed duties as a part-time transplant coordinator for more than 10 years. In 2015 he joined the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (VHUH) transplant coordination team, of which he has been appointed director in 2023. European Transplant Coordinator (UEMS) certification since 2015.

Active member in different scientific and professional societies regarding transplant and intensive care: Coordinator of the Donation and Transplant working group of the Spanish Society of Intensive Medicine, Critics and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC)(2021-23),  Board member of the Catalan Transplant Society (SCT) and Spanish Transplant Society (SET).

AS has extensive teaching experience in the field of donation and transplantation, either through his role as associate professor of the Faculty of Medicine of Rovira i Virgili University (URV) (2010-15) or collaborations with other universities such as the University of Barcelona (UB) and public (ONT, OCATT) and private (TPM) agencies, being a member of the faculty of more than 40 national and international courses as well as collaborating in European projects (Twining, EMPODaT, EUDONORGAN)

Experience in clinical research as part of different networks with which he has coordinated and participated in several projects financed by both public and private entities and is the author or co-author of more than 60 scientific publications and book chapters in the field.
