Dr. Maria Simonenko works as a heart transplant cardiologist and clinical researcher in Almazov National Medical Research Centre, St. Petersburg, Russia. Her fields of interests are the follow-up of heart transplant recipients, focusing on prevention, on-time diagnosis and management of post-transplant complications and comorbidities, the same as prescription of rehabilitation and exercise. In 2010 the 1st heart transplantation was performed on North-West of Russia and the same she joined a heart transplant team while being a medical student. She graduated and then completed her internship at the I.P. Pavlov St. Petersburg State Medical University. After that Maria undertook a cardio residency and PhD programme at Almazov National Medical Research Centre. Her PhD dissertation was focused on physical capacity and quality of life after heart transplantation. Since 2014 she had worked as a clinical research fellow in the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Research Department and since 2020 – as a clinical researcher. In 2016 she developed the protocol of long-term follow-up in recipients after heart transplantation that was accepted. And since 2016 Maria Simonenko is responsible for the whole post-heart transplant outpatient follow-up. At the age of 27 she was invited to lecture on post-graduate course about follow-up after heart transplantation and since that she lectures on a few post-graduate courses in the field of chronic heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation. She is also an active member of European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC – nucleus member), Heart Failure Association (HFA – committee member) on behalf of European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT). Numerous of publications were published in both Russian and English, the same as she co-authored position papers on behalf of European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Moreover, Maria works as a reviewer in the following journals: EJPC, ESC Heart Failure, Transplantation, JHLT, JACC: Case Reports etc.
