Dr. Doppenberg completed his master’s degree in technical medicine, track reconstructive medicine, in 2012. Hereafter, he began studying pancreatic islet isolation and transplantation as a doctoral student, focusing on donor organ quality, organ preservation, and standardization/automation of islet isolation. During this tenure, he received a travel grant, a poster prize, and a presentation prize for his work. His thesis is entitled “Functional Islets and Where to Find Them” for which he received the Dr.-F.-Gerritzen-prize for best Dutch doctoral thesis in the field of diabetes mellitus research. In parallel, he continued to develop a key project from his PhD research: creating an automated islet isolation machine called PRISM. This technology has been licensed to a commercial enterprise to exploit other centres. He is also a co-inventor on a patent application. His research currently focuses on several technical aspects of islet isolation and transplantation in addition to organ preservation and evaluation techniques of the pancreas, liver, and kidney. Dr Doppenberg acts as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed publications and has participated in opinion leaders’ workshops regarding pancreas and islet transplantation. Furthermore, he is a member of the Dutch Society for Technical Physicians (NVvTG), the Dutch Kidney Transplant Study Group, and the International Liver Transplant Society.
