Frank J.M.F. Dor, MD PhD, studied Medicine in Antwerp (Belgium) and at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He obtained his medical degree cum laude. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Transplantation Biology Research Center of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, where he conducted translational research in the field of transplant immunology with Prof. Dr. David Cooper and Prof. Dr. David Sachs. This work resulted in his PhD thesis entitled “Investigations relating to the induction of immunological tolerance through spleen transplantation in miniature swine” that he defended cum laude. He was trained as a surgeon at the Erasmus MC Rotterdam and the Sint Franciscus Gasthuis Rotterdam. During the last year of residency, he was trained as a transplant surgeon at the Erasmus MC Rotterdam. Frank Dor is a consultant transplant surgeon at the Department of Surgery of the Erasmus MC and serves as surgical director kidney transplantation. Erasmus MC has the largest programme for live donor kidney transplantation in Europe. Currently, he is also medical coordinator of the Transplant Unit, Liver Unit and Vascular Unit. In 2012, he was honorary consultant liver transplantation in King’s College Hospital London, UK, with Prof. Nigel Heaton. Besides his clinical duties, he is also an active scientist both conducting clinical studies (clinical trials in transplant surgery and peritoneal dialysis) and in basic and translational science with an emphasis on immunomodulation and ischemic conditioning in ischemia-reperfusion injury. He is one of the coordinators of the international “CONTEXT” consortium. Frank Dor is also very active in education. He currently serves as Vice-Chair of the education committee of the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT) and Chair of the Hesperis Course. He is Initiator and Director of the yearly international Live Donor Nephrectomy Course (LIDO course) and an active lecturer at the Erasmus MC University Medical Center, Rotterdam. Within ESOT, he is board member and chairman of the ELPAT working group “Living Organ Donation”. Furthermore, he is member of the Dutch Kidney Transplantation Steering Committee. From 2012-2013, he was member of the Health Council of the Netherlands. Recently, he was appointed as member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Dutch Kidney Foundation. Currently, he is an editorial board member of > 10 scientific journals, a.o. Xenotransplantation and European Surgical Research (Associate Editor).
