Antonio Citro is the Project Leader of the Pancreas Bioengineering Unit at the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy. He earned his master’s degree in medical biotechnology in 2009 and his Ph.D. in Experimental Surgery and Microsurgery in 2014, both from the University of Pavia, Italy. Dr. Citro’s research focuses on regenerative medicine. As a postdoctoral research fellow, he trained in decellularization technology and organ engineering in Dr. H. Ott’s Organ Engineering laboratory at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Boston, USA. His current research leverages his expertise in beta cell replacement, islet immunomodulation, and regenerative medicine (including 3D bioprinting and organ engineering) to bioengineer the endocrine pancreas microenvironment ex vivo, with direct implications for in vivo applications in diabetes treatment.
